IAEA: North Korea's Yongbyon Nuclear Site Renovation

VIENNA - North Korea reported to finishing the renovation and building facilities at the Yongbyon nuclear site. This site is a central element of North Korea's atomic weapons program.

"We have observed the renovation and construction at various locations within the site," said Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, Monday (07/09/2015), as quoted by Reuters. "This seems consistent with the statement that North Korea want to develop the nuclear capabilities," said Amano.

Amano did not say what the part of the Yongbyon site that had been renovated and developed. He simply asserted, the IAEA will continued to monitoring the activity on this site. "We continue to monitor developments at the Yongbyon site, mainly through satellite imagery," said Amano.

A report released by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), based on Washington said in April satellite images show activity on the site's main nuclear reactor. Previously, the site was inactive.

North Korea was believed to have conducted a nuclear test in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Since 2009, North Korea has not provide access yet to the IAEA nuclear inspectors to examine its nuclear sites. China is North Korea's closestally that seeking six-party talks to discuss North Korea's nuclear program.
