Migrant boat sinks in Offshore Malaysia, 14 Killed



Around 70 people are believed to be a passenger, when a boat carrying Indonesian migrants working in Malaysia was overturned in the sea due to a storm off the coast of Malaysia on Thursday (3/9).

Malaysian maritime officials said the boat was likely carrying workers home to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia while upside down on Thursday (3/9), not far from the coastal town of Sabak, killing at least 14 people.

Aliyas First Admiral Mohamad Hamdan, head of the district of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, said the boat was believed to be carrying 70 people. He said the death toll has been confirmed consisted of 13 women and one man.

According to Admiral Hamdan, the boat was overturned Thursday off the west coast of Malaysia, and at least 19 people had been rescued.

Hambali Yakup, the agency official, said the boat sank in bad sea conditions are not far from the beach. Malaysian officials had sent several ships and aircraft to search for victims who are still missing.

Indonesia About two million people are believed to work illegally in Malaysia. They often travel in rickety boats full of passengers, often at night, to avoid being arrested by the Malaysian authorities.
